History

A series of divine visions and revelations inspired Dada Lekhraj Kripalani and a group of 400 men, women and children in Hyderabad, Sindh (now part of Pakistan) to set out on the journey of spiritual awakening in 1936. The group came to be known as Om Mandali.

The profound revelations about soul, God and time by the Supreme Soul through the medium of Dada Lekhraj, who came to be known as Brahma Baba, triggered a powerful spiritual awakening among the members of the group but also provoked stiff resistance by a section of the Sindhi community. After some trials and tribulations, the group moved from Hyderabad to Karachi.

The group moved from Karachi to Mount Abu in Rajasthan, India. Surrounded by the mountains of the Aravali range Mount Abu was a tranquil place that provided a perfect backdrop for their spiritual learning and empowerment. The group was officially named as Prajapita Brahma Kumari Ishwariya Vishwa Vidyalaya – a place where spiritual knowledge is imparted to help humans discover their innate goodness and to help them empower themselves by linking with the Supreme Soul through Rajyoga.

The first batch of Brahma Kumari sisters travelled to different cities in India in 1952 to share with people the spiritual truths they had learnt. They established study centres where Rajyoga could be taught. In 1971, permanent centres were established in the UK and Hong Kong, which soon led to worldwide expansion. Today the organisation has an extensive network of centres in almost all parts of India and numerous branches abroad.
